Narrative Wisdom and African Arts

From October 19, 2024 to February 16, 2025 , the Saint Louis Art Museum explores the links between contemporary African art and its historical roots, and the extent to which historical and collective narratives are rooted in collective memory.

On this occasion, the Gervanne + Matthias Leridon Collection is pleased to lend Lawrence LEMAOANA’s “Sign up to be a man”, created in 2008.

The Saint Louis Art Museum has been collecting objects and works from sub-Saharan Africa since 1936. In this exhibition, works from the most contemporary African creation dialogue with ancient works from the 13th century.

The work of Lawrence LEMAOANA, a South African artist born in Johannesburg in 1982, is a plunge into political life. He borrows certain slogans and embroiders them onto pieces of traditional fabric. Through his play on misappropriation and humor, he exposes the serious failings of former president Jacob Zuma.
